JimmyJazz.com: Where are you from and what do you represent as an artist?

Trazz: Trazz is the name and I’m currently signed to Fix Your Face Music/ Property Music Group. I’m from Upstate New York… the biggest misconception about Upstate New York is that people never associate us with New York City, because we’re at least 6 hours away. But the thing is, we’re still part of New York State, but we have our own identity. My city [Buffalo] is one that really gets over looked a lot. We haven’t had a major artist come out of Upstate New York since Rick James. Rick James is our pride & joy here, but for me, I’m one of the artists to come out of the region and have major collaborations with a lot of industry artists. I’m ready to put the city back on the map, man.

JimmyJazz.com: In regards to lifestyle, does your overall fashion style reflect Buffalo? Which by the way is home to New Era Cap.

Trazz: I try not to consider myself as having a style. Glasses are something I have a fetish for. Some people it may be shoes, sneakers, jeans or whatever. I literally own over 50 pair of designer shades. So, that explains that. But as for style, Buffalo has it’s own style. It’s [Buffalo] influenced so much from TV… it has a lot of Southern influence; it has a lot of Canadian influence, since we are right by the border. So, I try not to put myself in a bubble, I just kind of do what comes natural to me.

JimmyJazz.com: Your collaborations with Pitbull, Akon, Colby O’Donis and others have party themes, what more can we expect from your music?

Trazz: The thing about it is, I originally got my start by radio music. My manager, DJ Noodles, his record that got him a lot of recognition was the “Lean Back” record with the Biggie vocals on it. He [DJ Noodles] has been in radio for over 15 years and he saw a lot of potential in me. We started off making music that everybody could feel… I think party & club music is universal. No matter where you are, everybody wants to have a good time. That’s the most appealing kind of music across the board. So we wanted to make music that’s appealing to everybody, which people can listen to on the radio and also go to the club and have a good time with.

JimmyJazz.com: How does an indie artist like yourself manage to get these major artists on your tracks? Considering that you are from Buffalo.

Trazz: You have to go outside of your box. This is not Atlanta [Georgia] or Miami [Florida]. So we don’t have the major recording artists in our backyard. You have to travel out and you really have to network. Fortunately for me, because I have a strong team behind me and a lot of members of my team are industry affiliated, it’s rarely ever that I’m ever here in Buffalo. Since I’m always in a different city trying to make moves and network.

JimmyJazz.com: Specking of being on the road, do you have any shows lined up for this Fall?

Trazz: Right now, I’m schedule to perform in Tampa [Florida]. This is actually November 16th. Every year, they throw a show, The Last Dance. It’s basically the last show of the year. In the past they featured other artists such as Plies, The Game, E-40…. I’m actually scheduled to perform on the pre-show. There’s also a tour being put together for Fabolous and Serani… I’m hoping I can get on that tour.

JimmyJazz.com: As far as Serani, you’ve also collaborated with reggae great Wanye Wonder on “Gonna Love U”….

Trazz: Wayne is phenomenal. He was such a good choice for the collaboration, because outside of him having national fame, he’s an international superstar. He has that Caribbean vibe to him. Like I had mention to you before, we try to make music that everyone could vibe with. Not knocking any national stars here [USA] that don’t have any international exposure, but we thought Wayne had that appeal that we can get shows in the Caribbean, based on the strength of that record [“Gonna Love U”]

JimmyJazz.com: Are you currently looking for different ways to leverage your music into different avenues?

Trazz: By trade, I’m actually an actor. Music is something I’ve been doing since the age of 5. I attended New York Film Academy for 2 years. I was actually in the first hip-hop gospel play to ever hit theaters. It was called Rise, It was written by Play (from Kid & Play) and Salt (from Salt-N-Pepa). Acting is something I’ve enjoyed just as much as music. So I always look for different avenues. I think music is my pride & joy and #1 priority, but it’s only a piece of the puzzle. I feel once I get in, I can showcase my acting ability. Acting is something I’ve been doing to fuel my music career and fund my lifestyle.

JimmyJazz.com: Going back into collaborations, if you could work with one artist, doesn’t matter the genre, who would it be?

Trazz: [Short pause]. That’s a difficult question. I’m such a huge fan of Jay-Z. In my opinion, the best to ever do it. But, I grew up and was influence by Big L. If he was still around, I think my dream would be do a collaboration, something crazy with Big L. If he were still around, he would be my first choice. I grew up knowing every verse he ever wrote.

JimmyJazz.com: I can kind of see that. You both have that flamboyant wordplay.

Trazz: The younger generation they never heard of Big L. He was someone that definitely died before his time; he never reached his peak of potential. To a lot of the young kids reading this article, make sure you do your homework on Big L. He was definitely one that influenced a lot of these MC’s out here.

JimmyJazz.com: Are you giving back to any upcoming artists from Buffalo?

Trazz: I feel that my region, not only my city, but my region has been overlooked. From Rochester to Syracuse… us as a region. There so many talented artists from my region that have there own niche. It’s going to be the domino-effect that St. Louis had, once one person comes out of there, all of the A&R’s and everyone’s attention is gonna be on. Once I give fuel and attention to this area, people are really going to see what we have to offer here. That will be a dream to me, to put my city on the map and give other people in my city [or in my region] an opportunity.

JimmyJazz.com: What’s one thing we don’t know about Trazz?

Trazz: Trazz is about to have a baby. That’s one thing that the fans don’t know. So it’s ‘Go Time’ even more. I’ve been pursuing my career as hard as I can up till this point, but I think the fans will expect a super surge from me. I have to provide for someone other than myself, and it only motivates me more.

JimmyJazz.com: Congrats on that

JimmyJazz.com: Last, how can fans get in contact with Traz?

For the 11th entry in our Booth-exclusive interview series, we’re giving readers an up-close and personal look at Trazz, the DJ Noodles protégé who recently brought us Drake-sampling single “All They Wanna Talk About.”

Though Trazz’ hometown, the industrial city of Buffalo, is known more for its harsh weather and unemployment than its hip-hop scene, the hardworking up-and-comer rose above his rough environment to rub shoulders with multi-platinum-selling artists and create some of the biggest records ever to come out of Upstate New York. Aligned with Noodles’ Fix Your Face! movement, the emcee/actor/model has earned over 1,000 radio spins nationwide thanks to the success of his current promo single as well as its predecessor, Booth-acclaimed Colby O’Donis collabo “She’s on Fire.”

In this exclusive, five-question interview, Trazz discusses the origin of his stage name, the first rap concert he ever attended and his hopes of becoming Upstate N.Y.’s breakthrough hip-hop artist.

Is there a story behind your name? If so, what is it?

Trazz: I used to be real involved into battle rap. One day during a battle this guy says to me “Yo homie, your locking these boyz down, your like Alcatraz.” So for a short time, I changed my name to Alkatrazz. Then I began doing some writing for “Salt” from Salt-N-Pepa, and she felt my name gave to much of a negative influence and she’s the person that actually shortened my name to “Trazz”

How and when were you first introduced to hip-hop?

Trazz: It’s funny because although I have always been listening to hip-hop, the first concert I ever went to was a MC Hammer concert. His show was crazy! I knew back then, this is what I wanted to do with my life.

Do you feel New York is ready to take back the top spot in hip-hop? What will be your role?

Trazz: I hope New York can play more of an effective role in hip-hop in the future. It’s where hip-hop originated. The entire region of Upstate New York is full of talented artists. Although this region has gotten overlooked a lot, I feel like I can be the match that sparks the flame for this entire area. Southern artists have definitely kept it alive and fun. I just hope that I can put my stamp on the game and remind some people that Hip Hop isn’t dead.

Are you working on any mixtapes or an album at the moment?

Trazz: I’m recording all the time. I have more than enough music to release 5 mix tapes, but our goal is to concentrate on getting the singles hot right now. When the album is ready to be released, the hardest part will be deciding what records to put on it.

What’s next for Trazz?

Trazz: I’m still pushing the single “All They Wanna Talk About”. Its doing really well in radio right now. We just finished my next single. I can’t give too much info away on it right now, but it’s big!!

Buffalo, isn’t a city that has birthed many stars so there is that crabs in a bucket mentality sometimes. The combination of violence and bad weather can make an entire city depressed. I love my city though and it’s exciting to see people in the street now appreciate me shouting my town out on every chance I get. Just keeping my head engulfed with hiphop listening to artists like Jay-Z, Big L, and Rakim helped influence me and keep me focused on the dream.

Your parents ran/run their own business. Was it hard to say “Sorry, mum and dad, but my future is the entertainment industry” or have they always supported your decision?

I was blessed to have parents with the entreprenuerial spirit but even more blessed to have a supportive family. My family are my biggest fans and supporters.
When I went on your myspace page I was impressed by the amount of hits your song got. Did you expect that?

Honestly, I hope for much more hits in the future. I have fans all over the world right now, but no where close to what I dream of having. I just want to be heard.

Talking of the Internet – do you think it brings more advantages like marketing with social networks or more disadvantages because of people downloading illegally?

I think its a give and take. Yes, the downloading and pirating of music hurts the artist in the sales aspect, but we live in the age of technology. As long as technology advances music will be more convienient and easier for people to obtain. All the social networks such as myspace, Twitter and facebook are free promotion to all artists. I encourage every artist to take advantage of them.

Your first single “She’s On Fire” featured Colby O’Donis and the remix for it even Pitbull. Did you met them in the studio or has everybody record his part alone? And who set up the contact?

My management plays a big part in my success. Fix your face music group has ties to a lot of industry artists. I’m fortunate that these artist recognize my grind, and are willing to work with me. In today’s technology era, you don’t have to be in the same place to record hit records. We sent Colby and Pit the song, they blessed it, and sent it back.

How was working with Akon for your song “By My Side” (available on iTunes)?

Akon is amazing. My manager, DJ Noodles is an Official Konvict DJ so making that happen was incredible.

DJ Noodles (produced “She’s On Fire”) is a good friend of yours. How did you both meet and how would you describe your (musical) relationship?

Dj Noodles and I are really close friends. Like Brothers. He and I grew up together since the age of 15. No other producer knows me better. He knows my sound. He can almost anticipate what I will do to record before I do it. He’s one of the godfathers of my son. One of my best friends.

Are you planning to record a video for your current single “All They Wanna Talk About”?

Definitely. The song has taken off beyond expectation. The people have spoken that they love it, so it’s only right to combine the visual aspect.

When you compare yourself to other current rap artists what would you say makes you special?

My versatility. Not many artists can rock a variety of records like I can. You may hear me over a Jeezy Instrumental, then flip back over an alternative/pop record. I can appeal to every crowd.

Will you collabo with other known musicians for your album or who would you like to collaborate with?

Theres so many artists that I have worked with so far but even more I would love to work with in the future. Bobby V, Lloyd, Ne-yo, Drake, Flo-rida, the list can go on for days.

Who does influence your work?

So many artists influence me. I would have to say just “Real Music” influences me. Real music isn’t defined as underground, or backpackmusic. Real music is what moves people. Weather it be a song about thugs on the street or people partying the club.

Many people say “Hip Hop is dead”. Would you agree?

Naw. It definitley has evolved from its origination, but it’s far from dead. The hip hop industry is a multi-billion dollar market. There are artist that are able to provide for the next few generations in their family off of this industry. It’s impossible to call hip hop dead when it’s bigger industry than it’s ever been.

When I get my hands on your iPod, whose music would I find on it?

A range of everything. I’m into Drake right now. Jay-Z’s album just dropped, so that’s in heavy rotation. I even dig some of the southern music. Shout to Gucci Mane..He’s killin it right now.

Now that we have been talking about music a lot I have to mention that Trazz isn’t only a talented musician but also a model and actor. Who have your modeled for and where can we see your acting skills?

Modeling is something I did in my younger days. Unless your Tyson Beckford it’s not much money in it. As far as acting, I’m a graduate of NY film academy. I do tons of theater so right now you can see me on stage at the Kavinoky Theater in Buffalo, NY. staring in the classic stage play/movie “A Few Good Men”. Also my latest film just dropped on DVD called “The Cuckold”. You can buy through amazon on this site: https://www.createspace.com/268236

Which one is the most fun for you?

I have a genuine love for acting and music. I started doing music first, so it will always be my 1st love.

We will now play a little game. I will say a few singers and rappers and you have to say a lil something about them without too much thinking.

Jay-Z

The King

Rihanna

Talented

Kanye West

Incredible

Beyoncé

Damnnnnnnn…..Too Beautiful

Akon

Gifted

Keri Hilson

fine as hell!

Drake

He got next

Whitney Houston

Respect…but I hope she kicked the crack

Kid Cudi

Lyrical

Trazz

The future Legend

Thank you for this great interview, Trazz.

iWontSTFU.blogspot.com wishes you the best for your career and personal life and hopes to talk to you again in future.

So if you are in Buffalo make sure to see Trazz’ play and cop his album next year!

XXLMag.com just dropped a dope interview with Jay Rock, If you ain’t up on thangs, then grab the DJ Noodles & Jay Rock “Coming Soon 2 A Hood Near You” mixtape now!

XXLMAG.COM | JAY ROCK, STREET’S DISCIPLE

Shhh, don’t tell anybody, but there’s something brewing out west. Though the Southern states may still have the game in a cobra clutch, newcomers like Watts-bred rhyme slayer Jay Rock is attempting to shed a little light and show that the sun has yet to set on the West Coast music scene. Having recently released the Lil Wayne-assisted single “All My Life” followed up by his collaboration with DJ Noodles, the mixtape Coming Soon 2 A Hood Near You, it’s safe to say that the secret’s out on the Cali MC. Now generating a healthy buzz, he’s hoping that his momentum will transfer into moving units when his debut LP, tentatively titled Follow Me Home, drops this spring on TopDawg/Warner Bros. Records. XXLMag.com sat down with the left coast lyricist to talk about his chance meeting with Lil Wayne, how he’s bringing unity back to hip-hop and how rap saved his life.

XXLMag: A lot of people are hearing about Jay Rock now but it’s like you came outta nowhere. How did you get started in the game?

Jay Rock: I been rhyming since like 13 [years old], I always had a love for music but it was never actually something that I thought would ever be a job, you feel me? I was into the streets and a lot of my homeboys was in the studio and I’d pass through, but it was just for fun. I lost a lot of my homeboys to the streets and a lot of my friends and family would be pushing me like “you got the talent to rap. Don’t let that go to waste.” So my big homie Dude Dawg, he’s from the same neighborhood as me, he came and picked me up out the streets, put me in the studio and made a lot of things happen for ya boy.

XXL: Speaking of being in the studio, your song “All My Life” featuring Lil Wayne has been getting some burn lately. How’d you two hook up for that?

JR: Basically, Wayne did a show at Universal Studios back home and it was brought to my attention so I just went down and showed my support. I caught him out back and introduced myself to him, let him know who I was, that I was a new artist that just got signed and that I’d love to work with him. He wasn’t on no Hollywood shit and I respect him for that. We exchanged numbers, I reached out to him and he called me right back and we had a chat. I was like, I got this track that we need to do I want you to get on it and he was like ‘cool but can you email it to me?’ I was like nah, I’ll come to you, where you at? I don’t really do the emailing stuff, things can get lost in the computer. So I was like, I’ma come to you, dog. I bought me and my boy a plane ticket, [Wayne] was all the way out in D.C., I hopped on his tour bus like ‘yo, I’m here.’ As soon as he got some studio time, we got it in and made it happen.

XXL: Wow, did you expect that type of reaction from him and that type of outcome?

JR: Man, I didn’t know what to expect, you feel me? As big as he is…but that was one of the realest things he ever did. Most people you don’t get that call back.

XXL: You’ve worked with several East Coast MCs, specifically Papoose, Joell Ortiz and Grafh on your track “East Meets West.” Are you trying to bridge the gap by reaching out to artists from the east?

JR: Of course. I think we all gotta do records with each other, we all gotta fuck with each other. It’s like things have been fucked up since the Pac and Biggie days. We all gotta come back together and get that unity. Let’s all get this money cause that’s what it’s about. Whenever I’m on the East Coast, I’m reaching out to whoever wanna do music with me. Let’s put all the other bullshit to the side and do real music.

XXL: A lot of artists say that, but what does real music mean to you?

JR: Real music is honest music. Anything I’ve been through, seen or even that somebody else spoke up about, I put it in my records. I been out here grinding in New York so you might hear me do a song about that. Just whatever I go through, who I am. Where Jay Rock is from and where he’s trying to go in life.

XXL: In your music, you rep your Blood affiliation heavy. It seems in the last few years it’s become fashionable for MCs to wear red rags and talk about it on wax. Some rappers have been called out for that. What’s your feelings on it?

JR: That’s where I came from so that’s always gonna be a part of me. I’m just telling my story. Snoop and them did it for years, why not rep my side ? I’m not out bangin’ on niggas or condoning people to go and kill innocent people or do drive-bys or nothing like that. I’m just pushing real, positive music. Any real street cat out there is gonna know what I’m talking about. As far as these rappers, I’ll put it like this, just respect it. Because you go to these different places and you better be about [what you say] cause if not these real dudes is gonna eat you alive. It’s nothing to be played with.

XXL: You said earlier that you were “picked up out of the streets.” If you weren’t rapping now, where do you think you’d be?

JR: Man I’d probably still be out there on the block…there’s no telling where I’d be. The path I was going on, maybe in the penitentiary or under the grave. If I didn’t have rap.

XXL: So with that being said, with your voice almost not being heard, what do you want people to take from your music? What kind of mark are you trying to leave?

JR: I want to tell everybody not to let people tell them they can’t do something. I mean, look at me. Who would have ever thought a dude out of Watts from the Nickerson Garden Projects would have a debut album coming out soon. So anything you wanna do, whether it be a doctor or lawyer or a rapper, you can do it. Just stay dedicated and work hard. Real talk.

This week MTV is featuring “Coming Soon 2 A Hood Near You” from DJ Noodles & Jay Rock on Mixtape Mondays.

Check out what Jay Rock had to say about some of the joints on the new mixtape:

» “Coming Soon to a Hood Near You.” “It’s talking about me coming!” Jay said. “I’m coming through every ‘hood with my music. The ‘hood is what I do this for. No matter what city or state you’re in, the ‘hood is the ‘hood. And all the ‘hood n—as and ‘hood chicks relate to me, because I come from the same struggles.”

» “All My Life” (featuring Lil Wayne and Will.I.Am). “This song is about moving from the bottom to the top,” Rock said. “And that’s not just for the ‘hood. It’s for everybody from every walk of life. It’s about forward progress in anything you’re doing. It’s also about determination and not letting anything stop you.”

» “I Cried” (produced by DJ Noodles). “It’s basic raw emotions that street n—as feel when they lose one of their n—as to the streets. All type of feelings run through a n—a, and retaliation is right at the top of the list.”

Jay Rock stopped thru the building a while back and with the upcoming release of his mixtape with DJ Noodles, we wanted to drop his Favorites. We’ve got some more coming from him next week, including him speaking on Martin Louie The King Jr. and Xzibit.

In the first segment, he drops some bars from his joint with Lil Wayne and his first single off the “Coming Soon To A Hood Near You.” He also talks about a fashion company he’s working with and how he never really intended on pursuing rap as a career. Part II finds him talking in-depth about how gang culture has influenced his life, the video for “Blood Walk,” and an assortment of questions I had about Bloods vs. Crips.

Record industry types are deathly afraid of phrases like “implode” and “collapse.” So we’ll simply state the facts. After peaking in 2000, the music industry’s sales are doing a swan dive reminiscent of that US Airways plane which ended up in the Hudson River last week. While most people laugh at the idea of paying $15 for a CD, they will gladly take a free mixtape. At any given time you can hit various places on the Internet–such as HipHopDX‘s Mixtape section [click to view]–and get access to any mixtape you want.

Since HipHopDX is co-sponsoring a free download of Jay Rock‘s DJ Noodles-assisted mixtape, Coming 2 A Hood Near You, it probably sounds transparent for us to list all of the reasons why you should check it out, right? We figured so too. So before the free download is available on February 3, Jay himself is here to tell you why you should use some of your precious bandwith on him as opposed to adding more porn to your hard drive.

HipHopDX: So, let’s cut to the chase. You’ve got the floor. What separates Coming Soon 2 A Hood Near You from the other 300 mixtapes that will get released next week?
Jay Rock: Coming Soon 2 A Hood Near You is a part of the journey to the album Follow Me Home. It’s like I’m making a few stops on my way home, and this is a way for my fans to follow me home as I make some stops on the way. This mixtape has some of my East Coast brethren on there, like my man Skyzoo [click to read], to some of my West Coast fam like Glasses Malone and Eastwood. People are going to hear me on different sounds and with different artists on this mixtape.

DX: Okay, fair enough. You’ve probably had a chance to sit back and study hundreds of mixtapes before dropping this. Give me some of your all time favorites?
Jay Rock: Let me see, man. I gotta say the one I was featured on, which was The Black Wall Street Journal Vol. 1 [click to listen]. I was on that, so I gotta represent. I like the one 50 Cent and them put out before that Terminate On Sight album dropped.

DX: You mean Return of the Body Snatchers [click to listen]?
Jay Rock: Yeah, The Body Snatchers; I love that mixtape. Then I gotta say my boy Glasses Malone on The Electric Chair mixtape [click to listen]. That mixtape was hard, man. I gotta say my boy K-Dot. He went hard on that Training Day. Damn, it’s so many that it’s hard to choose.

DX: Everybody makes a mixtape to set up their album. So what should people expect on Follow Me Home?
Jay Rock: Any real street cat out there…if you’re from the hood, and you’ve been through a struggle, you’re gonna feel this album. This album right here is my story. It’s real. I came from nothing. If you come from the bottom, and you tryin’ to work your way up to the top, you’re gonna relate to it. It doesn’t matter if you’re black, brown or white. If you’ve been through something, then you’re gonna feel this album. Real talk.

DX: Well let’s move away from the mixtape and talk about your struggle. You’re representing Nickerson Gardens, which is a Blood hood. You’re usually draped in red, and you mention your affiliation a lot. Are you afraid that’s going to overshadow the music?
Jay Rock: Nah, not at all. All I’m doing is representing my section. People know what it is and where I come from. I’m a product of my environment. Snoop and them did it for years, and I’m just reppin’ where I come from. I’m not telling people to go out and kill anybody…go ride on people or anything like that. I’m just making good music that people can relate to.

DX: On the flipside of that, the Los Angeles Times wrote a very flattering piece about you returning to Nickerson Gardens with 300 Thanksgiving turkeys.
Jay Rock: I was basically just giving back to my neighborhood man. I can’t forget where I come from. I remember the days when I ain’t have no good Thanksgiving. My struggle is what brought me to the hood to even be able to do that. I know it can be hard sometimes. Since I’m doing a little better than I was back then, it wasn’t nothin’ to come out of my pocket and help my people.

DX: While we don’t see enough of that, we do seem to see people talking about resurrecting the West Coast. It seems like it happens every five years like clockwork. How do you fit into that?
Jay Rock: Well I’m new, I’m young, and I’m bringing that real music, man. I’ve got that longevity in me man. Shouts out to everybody on the West Coast doing their thing too. There’s a lot of up and coming talent out here. We’re nice and we’re coming.

DX: Do you feel that the West needs to be resurrected?
Jay Rock: I don’t thing we ever really died, dog. Everybody wanna say, “The West been down,” but we’ve been here. We just gotta put out that good music. Everybody needs to come together and stop hatin’ on one another.

DJ Noodles stopped through SRC the day of the S.I.N. awards show...

New York, NY (December 17, 2008) - DJ Noodles stopped through SRC the day of the S.I.N. awards show and chopped it up about on his latest projects and the various stops he’s made along his road to success. He just released “Back On My B.S.; Fix Your Face Radio Vol. 8″ and also did a ridiculous mixtape with Akon in preparation for his album in stores now, called “The Freedom Mixtape”.

Being from upstate NY, he’s a big supporter of the homie Emilio Rojas, and is working with his own artist Trazz on his upcoming project. Details in the interview include his upcoming projects with Glasses Malone, Pitbull and a grip of others, as well as his experience as a resident DJ for Paris Hilton’s clubs in FL. DJ Noodles took home the 2008 Mixshow DJ Of The Year at the S.I.N. awards, and was proof of concept for his top rated mixshows on Buffalo’s 93.7 WBLK (The Wire, The Saturday Night Mixtape), his fan favorite Sirius Satellite Radio show (Fix Your Face Radio), and his internationally syndicated Blast Off Mix (WLLD Tampa, WHHL St. Louis, WRCL Flint, WJQM Madison, KRRQ Lafayette, Amsterdam). (Loud.com)
